Servius occupies an essential place in the culture of the end of antiquity, medieval and of Renaissance, first because he is a grammarian of exception ; then because he permanently exercised his influence on the reception of Virgile and because his comments are models of type; finally because its job, fed on a reflexion on language, on eloquence, on literary types, on philosophy, condenses the whole ancient knowledge.
While the reference edition of its writings is still that of Georg Thilo and Hermann Hagen (1878-1902), several editions are under way of development, in Europe and in the United States. As there is not big synthesis on him, necessity is felt of an exchange between researchers, that they are editors of texts, specialists of the comment and of the exegesis, the po ticiens, historians or philosophers. It is a question of being confronted with primordial questions: must the comment of Servius necessarily be arrested as a text adventitious and burst, or can he the being as a work in itself, having his clean rules, his coherence, his ambition, and offering the synthesis of a knowledge? How was this text read in the course of the centuries, which usage was made, which knowledge was kept?
