Clement Janequin (ca. 1485-1558) is one of the biggest French musicians of Renaissance. He illustrates magnificently all types of the song profane and develop a descriptive usage of the polyphony which makes heard with a brightness grabbing the song of birds, the din of battles or shouting of Paris. But his musical creativeness knew precedents and is not isolated. Under different forms, worry of voice, onomatopoeias and sound realism meet in humanist literature and in poem. If Janequin is inspired by the best poets in his/her time, as Marot or Ronsard, the songs stimulate in their turn the writing of literature and influence Rabelais. The musician answers a common desire to liberate the potentialities of voice and to find in the materiality of language a new means to express emotion.
Uniting historians, musicologists and literary, this symposium will try to specify the place and the singularity of Janequin in these sound explorations. But voice could not be a simple object of study! Debates will therefore be livened up with reading by Olivier Bettens and the first day will end with a concert of Group Clement Janequin.
International symposium organised with the help of National Library of France, RARE Team of the University Stendhal Grenoble 3, CERILAC team of the University Paris Diderot Paris, Laboratory GERHICO of the University of Poitiers, French Society of Musicology (SFM), French Society of Study of the Sixteenth Century (SFDES).
